4.28.00 – (LAA) – Negotiations Update, InfoRep,

Today is Friday, April the 28th, 2000 and this is John Ward, President of APFA.

There is nothing much in the way of negotiations news to report this week. I mentioned in last week’s HotLine that the Company is still reviewing our contract proposal and that we will resume bargaining in White Plains, New York this coming Tuesday.

By now I hope most everyone has received my letter in which I detail to the membership highlights of APFA’ s contract proposal. I also included a negotiations timeline on all that we’ve been doing since September to prepare for our return to the bargaining table.

This Monday, May the 1st you’ ll be able to preview APFA’s new and improved web site. Please check it out at www.www.apfa.org. Having a great union web site is a top priority of mine as APFA President and I’ m fortunate to have had two very talented individuals make this priority a reality. My thanks go to Communications Coordinator Leslie Mayo and especially to DFW flight attendant Michael Garza. With the Company providing low- cost computers with Internet access to all employees beginning this summer it is my hope that APFA will soon be able to communicate with all of you through the web site.

I know that you’ve heard us talk about the InfoRep program a lot lately. It’ s APFA’ s goal to have a strong, grassroots communications system to disseminate factual information to the field and since communications is a two-way street, it’ s just as important for our InfoReps to be our eyes and ears out there as it is for them to be the mouth. If you would like to get involved, call your base chair today and ask to be an InfoRep. All it takes is a willingess to stay informed of the latest news and to share that Information with your flying partners.

One of my favorite messages of this week came from Dallas base chair, Kim Boyett. Kim called to let me that she had received a call from a 37-year flight attendant wanting to get involved as an InfoRep. This particular flight attendant may be like a lot of you. Her involvement with APFA had previously consisted of paying her dues, voting and reading Skyword, but with some of the recent changes at APFA she’ s decided that it’ s time to get involved.

I thank you for your support. It is what gives us the strength at the bargaining table. And now here is Leslie Mayo with the rest of APFA’s HotLine for this week.

Thanks John. This is Leslie Mayo, current Los Angeles Vice-Chair and newly appointed Communications Coordinator with APFA HotLine news for the week ending Friday, April 28th.

We are in the last five days of the contractual month which began April 26th and ends April 30th. Flight Attendants should review Article 9.P.6. or Appendix I, Article 9.P.6. for procedures regarding pay protection. To qualify, you must lose your last trip of the month due to cancellation or illegality, and subsequently, do no flying. An OE is not considered a last trip. Should this happen to you, you must put your name on the make-up list for all days originally scheduled to fly and up through eight hours after the arrival time of the original sequence. You must make an effort to recover the time lost via the make-up system. Otherwise, you will forfeit the cancellation pay. Your obligation will appear in a header at the top of your HI1. After the obligation window has passed, the pay will be automatic following a computer search for your name on the make-up list. Please call the Scheduling Department at APFA headquarters, extension 8161 if you have any questions.

We would like to announce that on Monday, May 1st, you will be able to preview our NEW AND IMPROVED web site. We have listened to your feedback and requests regarding what YOU want to see on www.apfa.org and we are working around the clock to incorporate many new and different ideas within our site so that it becomes an invaluable resource for all members in good standing. Also, please let your fellow Flight Attendants know that the PREMIERE issue of SKYWORD, under our new APFA administration, will be shipped the middle of May.

As a reminder, Spring enrollment for Registered Companion travel cards will end on Sunday, April 30th. This enrollment period is for those eligible employees who have not yet registered a year 2000 companion. If you already enrolled a registered companion for the year 2000, you cannot make any changes at this time. If you need an enrollment form, check with your local base management.

In Industry news, AIRLINES NEWSLETTER reports that Don Carty was denied his bonus last year, along with other top executives at AMR. A proxy filed with the SEC reports that Carty received only $4.77 million last year with $759,375 in salary, $3.9 million in long term incentive program payouts and $68,869 in other compensation. This package is nearly 10% less than the $5.2 million he received the previous year.

Hotel reviews will be conducted during the month of May in the following cities: Raleigh-Durham, San Jose, California, Mexico City, and Detroit – both the long and short layover hotels. Please direct your comments regarding our layover hotels to the APFA Hotel Department at APFA headquarters extension 8306, use the hotel debrief form in operations, or online in the hotel section of the APFA website.

APFA base meetings for May are as follows: IDF on Tuesday, May 9th; DFW and LAX on Wednesday, May 10th; and SFO/SFO-I on Wednesday, May 31st. Check your local base bulletin boards or the APFA web site to verify meeting places and times.
