9.18.01 – (LAA) – Memorial Services for Crew Members of Flights 11 and 77, Phone Watch

This is John Ward, President of APFA. Today is Tuesday, September 18.

Information regarding Memorial Services and funeral arrangements for the crew members of flights 11 and 77 will follow this message.

I have two items on which I would like to update you.

First: security. On Sunday, September 16, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta announced the creation of two “Rapid Response Teams” to deliver detailed recommendations for improving security within the national aviation system. One Team will focus on increasing security at the nation’s airports, the other on aircraft security. The Teams will report their recommendations to the Secretary no later than October 1. Participating in the Rapid Response Team on aircraft security will be: Bob Baker, chairman and CEO of TWA LLC; Robert Davis, a former vice president at Boeing; Capt. Duane Woerth, president of the Airline Pilots Association (ALPA); and Patricia Friend, international president of the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA). APFA has been working very closely with representatives from APA, ALPA and AFA on helping to formulate these security recommendations.

The other thing I wanted to speak to you about this evening is the potential for layoffs. Although the Company has not notified APFA of any planned layoffs, I don’t think anyone would be surprised to hear American Airlines added to the growing list of carriers that have already announced plans for job cuts. Officers from APFA, APA and TWU are meeting with Don Carty tomorrow afternoon at AMR Headquarters to discuss the state of the airline, and we will update this hotline following that meeting. I realize rumors are running rampant. Please stay informed by reviewing the provisions of Article 16 and Appendix F of the contract for more information regarding the procedures that must be followed in the event of an overage. Leaves of absence and Partnership Flying must first be offered prior to any reduction in force.

Please try to contact Crew Schedule if you are interested in volunteering to fly on part-time, days off, vacation, out-of-base, etc. If you are unable to contact Crew Schedule, please call your local flight service and leave a detailed message, if no one is available, including your employee number and the days you wish to fly.

Flight Attendants should pull up your HIHTL and HIDIR information for specific hotel layover information and transportation contact numbers. If your hotel transportation is not available outside it could be due to the fact that these vans are not allowed to linger in front of the airport for security reasons. Please call the specific transportation company when you land to let them know you are ready for hotel pick-up.

PhoneWatch is in need of local DFW area Flight Attendants who would be willing to give a day or two or even three to volunteer at APFA PhoneWatch. PhoneWatch has become an invaluable source to Flight Attendants throughout this crisis and will continue to provide information as long as we have the manpower to maintain it.

Wednesday, September 19, 2001 at 6:00 p.m. St. James Episcopal Cathedral (this is located between Huron and Superior Streets – 2 blocks west of Michigan Avenue)

A memorial service for Captain Charles Burlingame III will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 20th at the Naval Academy Chapel, in Annapolis, Maryland. Employees are encouraged to wear their uniforms.

For security reasons, all guests’ names must be included on a list for the guard at the entry gate. The Naval Academy Security Office must have this list no later than Tuesday, September 18th. To place your name on the list, please call 703-779-9769, speak clearly and spell your name, or email your name to [email protected]. You will be required to present a photo ID at the gate.

In New York

There will be a candlelight vigil in Queens, on Wednesday September 19th at 7:00 at the corner of Metropolitan Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard.

In WASHINGTON DC , there will be a memorial service on Friday, September 21st at 11:00 a.m. at the Hilton Manter Centers. This is located at 5000 Seminary Road in Alexandria, Virginia. Contact number is 703.845.1010. Full uniform is requested.

In Boston

APFA, APA, AFA and ALPA have organized a memorial service on September 26, 2001 at 12:00 noon.

This will be held at: City Hall Plaza Boston, MA

Lima Flight Service will be offering Mass in remembrance of our fellow fallen crewmembers of flights 11 and 77, Tuesday, September 18 at 5:30 p.m.

In the meantime, any cards for the individual families of our Flight Attendants from Flights 11 and 77 may be sent to them ATTN APFA: Communications Department at 1004 West Euless Blvd., Euless, TX 76040. APFA is specifically requesting that any photographs you may have of any of the crew be sent to the APFA Communications Department, along with any personal stories you might wish to include. These will be used in a future edition of SKYWORD and will also be forwarded to the families. Please try to send any photos and/or stories by September 24th.

APFA asks all Flight Attendants to place a white ribbon behind their Union Pin while at work in remembrance of our fallen crewmembers. A red, white and blue ribbon is appropriate for all other victims of the September 11th tragedy.
