Dallas, Ft. Worth, TX (May 11, 2012) – Today, the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) will join the Allied Pilots Association (APA) in demonstrations at American Airlines company headquarters in Fort Worth and at the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. The unions, which together represent the approximately 27,000 members of American Airlines’ flight crews, are protesting their company’s attempts to abrogate their contracts through the bankruptcy process.

“Management wants to reorganize the company on the backs of its employees,” said APFA President Laura Glading. “The fact is: this company has a revenue problem. American has fallen behind its competitors in terms of its network and its product. The business plan doesn’t address these problems, it only cuts labor costs. We need a real solution.”

Their demonstrations were accompanied by petitions, signed by an overwhelming majority of the two unions, which indicated employees have no confidence in management’s business plan. In under a week, over 11,388 flight attendants signed the petition.

APFA, APA, and the Transport Workers Union, which are the three largest unions at American Airlines and represent a combined 55,000 people, recently announced their support of a plan put forth by US Airways to merge the two airlines. In an open letter to the Board of Directors of American’s parent company, the three union presidents stated that they did not believe American could emerge from bankruptcy as a viable standalone company. They cited synergies that a US Airways-American merger would create that would enable the combined airline to compete with Delta and United Airlines.
