Never Forget – Flight 93 Memorial and APFA 9/11 Virtual Card

Next Wednesday marks the twelfth anniversary of 9/11. It is a day when every one of us stops to reflect upon the incredible loss we suffered when AA Flights 11 and 77 and United Flights 93 and 175 were hijacked and steered toward U.S. targets.

Three of the four aircraft struck their intended marks. The fourth, United Flight 93, upon learning that other flights had been used as weapons by terrorists that same morning, took matters into their own hands and overtook the cockpit. As we all suspect, that target was the White House.

We will never forget that day, where we were and those we lost.

Last year, APFA became aware that the funding for the National Flight 93 Memorial had come to a halt. APFA’s Legislative Representative Julie Frederick-Tandy, IDF, took the lead on this project to help see this memorial through to completion. We believe that focusing our efforts on helping the National Park Service complete this memorial is a fitting tribute to all of our fallen coworkers. The Coalition of Flight Attendants will be in the halls of Congress on Tuesday, September 10, 2013, requesting that each member of Congress donate to the memorial.

The Tower of Voices, the part of the memorial tall enough to be seen from the highway, will mark the entry to and exit from the memorial site. It will house 40 wind chimes. The continuing songs of chimes in the wind will celebrate a living memory of those who are honored. The curved tower, covered with white glass tile, will be illuminated at night and will stand in living memory to the voices of the heroes of Flight 93 and memorialize the loss of lives we all suffered that day.

APFA has created a virtual online memorial card. We invite all airline employees, your families and friends to participate. This ‘card,’ once filled with names and personal messages, will be printed and delivered to the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York along with an American Airlines flight attendant uniform donated by APFA. Please take a moment to sign the 9/11 Memorial Card.
