Modified Reserve Assignment Periods (RAPs)

JCBA 12.E.4After the Reserve has completed her/his rest, she/he will be placed on a full RAP shift unless the Reserve requests to be placed on a RAP with a modified start time. Crew Schedule may, but is not required to, award the modified RAP to the Reserve. The modified RAP will contain the same end time as the originally published RAP.

If your contractual rest after an assignment makes you illegal for a RAP, you will not be forced onto a modified RAP. You may bid for a modified RAP by placing a future bid in ROTA. Standing bids are not considered for modified RAPs. You may still be awarded/assigned (eligible for) a standby shift or sequence in ROTA after your contractual Home Base Rest, unless waived by the Flight Attendant.

Please remember if you do not want a modified RAP after an assignment, do not submit a ROTA Future bid with RAP preferences.

Satellite Station and ROTD

As a reminder, if your base has a satellite station and you are on Reserve, you can submit an aggressive bid in Reserve Open Time Daily (ROTD) for a satellite trip. Please remember, you are responsible for your own transportation to/from the satellite base. If you have been awarded a satellite trip and it is not your last day in the block of Reserve days, you may be awarded or assigned at your home base the following day.

A Flight Attendant will never be assigned a satellite sequence.

Have you experienced a suspected Uniform Reaction?

If you have experienced a suspected reaction to a uniform (Twin Hill or Aramark), APFA strongly recommends that you seek medical attention and advice from a well-regarded medical provider who specializes in the health issues you have experienced. We also strongly encourage you to fill out a New Uniform Reaction Report on the APFA website at this link and to also file an IOD by calling 844-777-8463. For more information and list of resources/FAQs, please visit Uniform Fact Sheet – 2.27.18

(New Hire Probationary Flight Attendants are eligible to participate in Uniform Alternatives and not required to wear a uniform that has caused a reaction.)

Light Duty? Restricted Duty?

When a Flight Attendant on IOD (Injury on Duty) visits the worker’s comp doctor, he/she will send a report to the insurance carrier indicating whether or not the Flight Attendant can return to work.

There are several terminologies the worker’s comp doctor will use to describe the Flight Attendant’s work status for example: “return to work with light duty,” “restricted duty,” or “full duty with no restrictions.” The doctor may also state “no work at all.” (These doctors also treat non-airline employees, therefore, they are not familiar with the fact that AA does not offer “light duty” or “restricted duty” for Flight Attendants.)

Q: If the doctor writes “light duty” or “restricted duty” on the paperwork after my doctor’s visit, since AA doesn’t offer either light or restricted duty, am I cleared to work?”
A: No. If a doctor writes “restricted duty” or “light duty” this indicates to AA that the Flight Attendant has not been cleared for duty.

Making the Rounds

This past week Julie Frederick and I were in Washington DC, attending the Air Carrier Training & Airline Rule-making Committee meetings. The intense two day meetings were a great opportunity to meet and work with Labor, FAA  and other aviation professionals.

Last week we announced that we have scheduled a Retirement Seminar in DFW from 11am until 2pm on Friday, September 14th at the Yandry Center. We have already received many replies from members who are interested in attending, as well as requests for additional seminars at other bases. Thank you for the positive response!

We are currently working on the schedule, but hope to schedule several more seminars at both LAA and LUS bases before the end of the year. The dates will be posted as soon as they have been finalized. These seminars cover a wide range of topics including: Retiree travel, Pensions, 401(k), COBRA, and Medicare.

LAA Flight Attendants can download a pension estimate from the Pension Service Center page on Jetnet. LUS Flight Attendants can request a copy of their pension estimate from the PBGC by calling 800-400-7242.

Members unable to attend the seminars are always welcome to watch the retirement webinar series available on the APFA Retirement Page, as well as download the Good Slide! Retirement Handbook. Everyone is welcome to attend any seminar, regardless of base or seniority.
