APFA Letter to Elwell Stimulates Action From SenatorsIn response to APFA National President Lori Bassani’s letter to FAA Acting Administrator Dan Elwell last week, Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Ed Markey (D-MA) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) sent a follow-up letter to Mr. Elwell expressing their disapproval of the slow implementation of the FAA Bill.

“Over seven months after enactment, we have yet to see FAA take any action. This is unacceptable. We write today to request an update on finalization of this critical rule and to inquire about steps being taken by the agency to meet the one-year deadline, as required by law. We also request that FAA coordinate with the Office of Inspector General at U.S. Department of Transportation (IG) to ensure that the new seat size rule adheres to safety standards,” wrote the Senators.

Senators Blumenthal, Markey and Whitehouse’s Letter to Acting Administrator Elwell

Frustrated, too? Let Mr. Elwell know that we are still waiting for him to uphold the law. Tell him to implement the Flight Attendant 10-hour rest minimum as well as the studies to address cabin air and seat pitch.

Unexpected Turbulence – Protect Yourself!

(This is a repeat of the column featured April 3, 2019 in The Weekly Scoop, as the IOD Dept has seen an alarming increase in turbulence related injuries)

Thunderstorm season is here and this is the time of year that injuries occur due to unexpected turbulence.

If the Captain has not advised the Flight Attendants to be seated and you are experiencing turbulence, TAKE THE NEAREST OPEN SEAT IMMEDIATELY, if possible. If that is not possible, sit on the floor and hold onto a stationary object. When conditions permit, notify the Captain.

Don’t wait for the Captain to make an announcement. If you sustain an injury due to turbulence, it is imperative that you notify the Captain that you have been injured and request that the turbulence be documented. It is important that you let the Captain know that you will be seeking medical treatment.

Turbulence related IODs can be filed 24/7 by calling 1-844-777-8463.
You are NOT required to follow the nurse’s recommendations and are free to seek medical treatment. Simply advise the nurse if you intend to seek immediate medical care.

All Flight Attendants should also file a CERS Report. The CERS Report is located on the Flight Service website by clicking on Safety and Security.

For more information about turbulence safety, refer to the Inflight Manual – Safety and Security – General Safety or contact the APFA IOD Department.
