Possible Strikes by UNITE HERE!

UNITE HERE! workers prepare food for American, Delta and United airlines. APFA members count on caterers to prepare and deliver food and beverages to our aircraft.

18,000 airline catering workers who prepare and transport food and beverages are some of the poorest paid in the airline industry. Members of UNITE HERE! have authorized strikes in 13 cities across the country.

Strikes will not occur immediately because under the Railway Labor Act, workers cannot strike until released by the National Mediation Board. However, the strike votes make clear that the workers are firmly committed to obtaining real change in their contract.

Multiple groups are available for you to opt in to, such as PBS bidding reminders and base specific messages from APFA National Leadership and your local Base Leadership. More groups can be added as the system evolves.

This is an optional service and is not intended to replace hotlines.  It’s another way to stay informed when it comes to time sensitive and urgent matters.

Keep an eye out for a special hotline from your Communications Department on how to sign up and join different groups!

What is Professional Standards?

The APFA EAP Professional Standards is a voluntary, confidential service offering members the opportunity to resolve conflicts or concerns with co-workers without management involvement.  It is the lowest level of informal intervention possible.

Our goals are to:

  • Support and enhance the standing of the Flight Attendant profession
  • Promote professionalism and restore professional conduct
  • Ensure a safe working environment
  • Provide the opportunity to disclose and effectively resolve problems in a voluntary, confidential (though not anonymous), manner.

Who we are & what we do:

The Professional Standards representative(s) at each base:

  • Monitor the voicemail extension designated for that base
  • Gather information
  • Remains objective and is a neutral facilitator
  • Acts as a neutral facilitator to understand the Flight Attendant’s goals and/or intentions
  • Identifies options to meet the caller’s goals
  • Collaborates in developing an action plan to address the interests of all parties.

The APFA Professional Standards encourages our members to act with integrity, treat others with honesty and respect and take responsibility for their own ethical behavior. By promoting this standard of conduct, we ensure fair treatment for all our members in the workplace.

Base Professional Standards Contacts

Our Professional Standards Representatives are available to assist when there is a problem with professional conduct that the parties have been unable to address themselves. Behaving ethically is at the core of professional behavior. It is what distinguishes professionals from other in the workplace. Our Professional Standards extension is monitored continually to ensure a prompt response.

Senate to Vote on New FAA Administrator

The Senate Commerce Committee has scheduled a vote this week on Steve Dickson for the position of FAA Administrator. The FAA has been without a confirmed Administrator since January 2018. Dickson was a pilot and the Senior Vice President of Flight Operations at Delta until retiring last October. He worked at Delta for 27 years.

Aviation safety is a priority for our Flight Attendants, pilots and passengers. With concerns over the safety of the Boeing 737 MAX ongoing, this is a crucial time for the FAA and its leadership. We have also been waiting for the Agency to issue a ruling on 10 hour minimum rest regulation for Flight Attendants, among other important provisions from the 2018 FAA Reauthorization Bill.

UBL / Generic UBL Ballots Remain Active

Question: I received a UBL award, but had to drop.  Why was I awarded another trip from that ballot?

Answer: UBL ballots, including Generic Ballots, remain active until the Flight Attendant deletes it.  If you have multiple requests on your ballot and receive an award, you may be awarded another request from that same ballot.  A UBL award that is subsequently dropped, may make you legal for another award from that same ballot.

Where’s My Jumpseat?

The Station Assignment Chart is located in each aircraft chapter of the IFM, and provides a quick reference to responsibilities, personal stowage, exit row responsibilities, pre-flight checks and more. If flying on a new or unfamiliar aircraft, you can review the chart to ensure compliance with all of your required responsibilities – including your proper jumpseat assignment.

Ensure that you view the latest revision. It provides the most up-to-date information.
