Letter from APFA National President to Boeing President and CEO Muilenburg

Fellow American Airlines Flight Attendants,

The second day of congressional hearings regarding the Boeing 737 MAX jets took place yesterday on Capitol Hill. Boeing executives admitted that their company made mistakes in developing its 737 MAX plane. Dennis Muilenburg is the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Boeing. Testifying to the Senate Commerce Committee, Muilenburg was repeatedly questioned about what Boeing knew about the safety issues of the 737 MAX and when it knew of them. Muilenburg made this statement during the hearings:

“On behalf of myself and the Boeing company, we are sorry, we are deeply and truly sorry. We’ve made mistakes and we got some things wrong.”

As APFA National President, it is my duty to protect the safety and security of each and every Flight Attendant that I represent. Yesterday evening, I sent the letter below to Mr. Muilenburg, which expresses our concerns with the 737 MAX. It is important to recognize that many questions and the fear of working on this aircraft is an ongoing conversation with the over 27,000 Flight Attendants of American Airlines. Flight Attendants are safety professionals. Our workforce should not and will not come to work afraid for their safety. As stated in my letter to Mr. Muilenburg, “our lives are not for sale.”
