September 20, 1989: USAir Flight 5050

On September 20, 1989, Flight 5050 from LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte experienced an aborted takeoff due to a rudder trim issue. The aircraft had accelerated to nearly 160 miles per hour, and due to the runway’s wet conditions, the aircraft could not be stopped. The Boeing 737 aircraft crashed into the water.

The flight was carrying 57 passengers and six crew members. Thanks to the heroic efforts of the four Flight Attendants on board that evening, 55 of the 57 passengers survived. All six crew members survived the crash as well.

On this 31st anniversary of the accident, APFA honors and recognizes the Flight Attendants of USAir Flight 5050.
