PHX Flight Attendant Displacements

American Airlines continues to adapt to the new reality of operating a very different airline during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Everything we thought we knew about our airline is changing before our eyes. The changes have come at us rapidly, and have included involuntary furloughs, base closures, extended leaves of absence, early out programs, staffing reductions, and base realignments, to name a few. Flight Attendants have been forced to make difficult decisions on their future with American. These decisions have not been easy and have caused incredible disruption to our lives and our careers.

Today, the Company announced their intention to displace Flight Attendants from the Phoenix, AZ crew base, effective with the February 2021 bid month. As of today, we expect 284 of the most junior Flight Attendants and 184 furloughed Flight Attendants to be displaced. The most senior Flight Attendant subject to displacement in Phoenix has an occupational seniority date of April 26, 2004. Effective with the February 2021 bid month, American expects to have approximately 1,135 Flight Attendants based at Phoenix (active and inactive).

Our airline is struggling and will need to quickly reshape to match the current demand and pricing environment. The Phoenix news follows on the heels of 8,000 involuntary furloughs, and the closure of the Raleigh/Durham, NC and St. Louis, MO crew bases. Looking back even one year ago, no one could have imagined we would be dealing with an entire industry in crisis.

As we continue to navigate a pandemic that shows no signs of slowing, we want to assure you that we will be here to help. Our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is staffed with an incredible group of Flight Attendants that stand ready to assist you. You do not have to navigate these changes alone:

APFA will continue to advocate for the Flight Attendants based at Phoenix, Raleigh/Durham, and St. Louis. Along with other Unions across American Airlines and the industry, we will continue to fight for an overall stimulus package that contains the Payroll Support Program extension to return our furloughed Flight Attendants to active status as quickly as possible.

As more information on the Phoenix downsizing becomes available, we will host a virtual town hall to answer questions and help you make the best decisions for you and your family. We will communicate with the Phoenix Flight Attendants often as information becomes available.

For now, please take care of yourselves, and each other.

In Solidarity,

Please remember, we have 7,985 involuntarily furloughed Flight Attendants at American Airlines.
