February Recognitions

February is the last winter month in the Northern Hemisphere and the last summer month in the Southern Hemisphere. The days are slowly getting longer, and we are seeing snow in many places we fly. As our world becomes increasingly diverse and interconnected, a basic understanding of the beliefs and experiences of individuals can impact our interactions with one another, so our relationships become more meaningful.

February is Black History Month. We take this month to spotlight Black achievement, lifting the voices of African Americans of our past and present who have impacted history, influenced us in our own life, and add to the culture and experiences of our lives.

February 1 is the Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival. This is an important festival and this year, of the twelve zodiac signs, it is the year of the tiger, from the lunisolar Chinese calendar. The lunisolar calendar year is divided by the phases of the moon, fitting into the solar cycle.

February 15 is Susan B. Anthony Day, a day to celebrate the birth of Susan B. Anthony (1820–1906) in honor of all she did for the women’s suffrage movement.

February 16 is the full moon of February, known as Snow Moon. It is named the Hunger Moon by some Native American tribes. It is also called the Storm Moon. On this day, you can spot Mercury, as it appears at its farthest distance from the Sun in the morning sky.

February 20 is United Nations World Day of Social Justice to recognize efforts to achieve fair outcomes and greater social justice by addressing poverty, social and economic exclusion by promoting sustainable development, employment, social protection, global citizenship, human rights, and good principles and rights for everyone.
