August 2022 Staffing and Allocations

There will be a slight increase in the amount of block hours as compared to July. We are up 27% from August of 2021, but our headcount is still down about 800 heads from pre-COVID levels.

Reserve percentages were slight lower than July, but we are forecasted to have a 1.5% increase from last August, as compared to 3% system-wide. Traditionally August experiences a pull down toward the end of the month, however the schedule reduction is not expected to occur until the Tuesday after Labor Day. With the August schedule remaining constant and other variables which include absenteeism and weather events, all factor into the increased percentage year over year. We can expect to see lower a lower Reserve percentage for September when the pull down of flying occurs.

The percentage of turns will increase slightly, 2-day trips will remain the same, and 3-day trips will decrease slightly. Sit times remain the same and according to the Company any effort to decrease them, results in an increase in 3-day trips.

We will continue to see less wide-body flying in the Domestic operation as those aircrafts are dedicated to the long-haul market. The PHL 1/3 on the 787-8, and the JFK 1/1 on the 777-200 will continue to operate daily though the end of August. The LAX 787-8 Transcon turn will also operate daily. The Company is optimistic about taking deliveries of the 787 by the end of 2022.

The double layovers will continue through October in the Deep South markets. With the second GRU flight returning in late October, there is the potential to build that pairing as a Rocket for November. This will depend on the departure times, along with an adequate buffer to reduce the layover rest. IPD pairings cannot be reduced below 14 hours unless originally built as a Rocket. To satisfy the JCBA contractual language, a Rocket must be built with less than a 14 hour layover. For example, if an IPD paring is built with a 13.59 hour layover or less, this can be considered a Rocket and the layover can be reduced to 10 hours in actual operations. If the IPD pairing is built with a 14-hour layover or greater, it cannot be considered a Rocket since it cannot be reduced below 14 hours in actual operations. So if GRU is built with a 16-hour layover, it cannot be considered a Rocket and the layover can only be reduced two hours down to 14 hours in actual operations. So the risk for delays increases when there is not adequate buffers to reduce the layover rest. This is what drives the longer layovers.
