August 2022 Staffing and Allocations

Hello Chicago. We hope you had time to enjoy the holiday weekend. Unfortunately, the weekend was marred by senseless gun violence. Our hearts ache for the residents of Highland Park in the wake of the July 4th parade mass shooting. Please keep the families of all the victims in your prayers. Hug your loved ones a little tighter today.

The August Staffing and Allocation calls were held on the weekend. These calls are becoming increasingly frustrating as our base concerns seem to fall on deaf ears. But we will not give up. We will continue to be your voice on these calls and let the Company know we are not happy.

It seems to us the departments that handle staffing, allocations and PBS continue to work in silos. On the call, we asked if these departments look at the PBS bid award results (specifically the min/max constraints) and how they were impacted by staffing numbers (reserve percentage, total number Reserve and Lineholders, targeted line average). Our question was met with silence, which we took to mean no one is looking at that data. We requested that data. We’ll see what we get.

Staffing

The systemwide reserve percentage is 22.6%. ORD reserve is slightly lower than the system: 475 reserves at 22.1%. We believe this Reserve number is again much higher than necessary.

The expected line average at PBS open is 83.0. The systemwide average is 82.4. We were told that number will “likely” be lower after the bid run. We argued even if it ultimately lowers post PBS, the starting point is way too high!

Allocations

August flying is similar to July.

There is a slight increase in turns and a small reduction in 4days. We always request them to be built commutable on both ends.

The number of trips with sit-times exceeding 3 hours has decreased slightly. The lack of productive time is a point of contention for most bases.

The number of ODANs is slightly higher next month, August has 15.33 starts per day vs July with 14.26 starts per day. We will keep an eye on these sequences as the number is getting a little higher than the base is traditionally comfortable with.

Important Dates

Remember, July 1-7 is considered a “critical period” in the Flight Attendant Attendance and Performance Program. This means that if you have no chargeable absences during this period, you will be eligible to receive an incentive credit to be used to reduce future attendance occurrences. If you do have a chargeable absence between July 1-7th, this could trigger an additional attendance point.
