Coverage Needed (CN) Dates – January 2023

Coverage Needed (CN) is a term applied to a day in a bid month when not enough Flight Attendants bid in PBS to fly on that day. PBS will allow as many Flight Attendants to be off on a particular day as possible, whether it is a holiday or not. However, PBS will reach a point where it has to start forcing coverage because it cannot finish the award process with the number of pairings that remain in open time.

Some of you may have noticed a “PN” designator next to your assigned pairing for January. Pairing Pool None pairings, labeled on your award as “PN” result from not bidding enough for your seniority. This means that your pairing pools (Layer 1 through Layer 7) did not provide PBS enough pairings that could be held at your seniority to complete your line. None of your properties, preferences, or specific days off are guaranteed to be honored in PN processing.

Please Note: Anytime you are awarded a CN or PN pairing, your line will automatically be labeled as Layer None (LN). PBS could not complete a legal line with all your layer preferences, including your Target Credit Range (TCR).

How do I locate the coverage needed (CN) dates on my PBS award:

Reserves:

Example: Flight Attendant with seniority 17482 has CN dates on January 1, 2, 4 and 5.

Lineholders:

Example: Flight Attendant with the seniority 14609 had a CN date on January 1.

How do I read the Coverage Needed Charts?

When there are coverage needed dates for either Lineholders or Reserves in a base, the report below gives the seniority number of the most senior person given the day as coverage needed with the date listed to the right (date format displays as YYMMDD). Every FA junior to that FA has that CN day, and each additional CN day is listed to the right. The chart progresses as more dates are added, displaying the seniority number of the most senior FA required for the additional CN day(s).

In the chart below, starting with seniority #11807:  coverage needed dates are on the Jan 4 and 5. Then, beginning with seniority #14575, Jan 2 was also a coverage needed date. At seniority #20112, coverage was needed on Jan 1, and lastly at seniority #20611, Jan 7 was added.
