PROFIT & SHARING are NOT EQUAL

On April 27, 2023, American Airlines announced the profits for the 2022 profit-sharing calendar year. Flight attendants will receive 1.3% of our eligible earnings from the $211 million shared amongst all workgroups. You and I know what it took to make this company profitable. I am as disappointed as many of you to see the separate definitions of one term, PROFIT-SHARING.

While we deserve more, we will not be distracted and must stay on course, unified, and determined to do whatever it takes to get the contract we have earned. Our focus must not be on one payment already decided and one we cannot change but on compensation, reserve, lodging, pay protections, and all the contractual language we must fight to secure long-term, paycheck after paycheck, for years to come. Your participation at contract action picket events, call-to-action, and ensuring you are dues current so you can exercise your right to vote in all union matters is an effective way to respond to this announcement. Numbers matter: while showing outrage on social media may feel relieving, it will not compel management to give us what we deserve.

We want American to continue a path of success and profitability but make no mistake that it is impossible without front-line workers like you and me. Here in New York, We are READY to do whatever it takes to attain a contract we have earned and deserve, especially since we now know we cannot rely on management’s definition of sharing. Only we can define what contract is acceptable for us; that is where our power is. Stay READY!
